Professor Steve McKay
Professor of Social Research, University of Birmingham
Within TSRC, Steve McKay works on issues surrounding the economic impact of the sector and the workforce & workplaces within the sector. Currently he is looking at the workforce employed within the sector, their characteristics and contribution. He recently conducted the cost-benefit analysis (social return on investment) for the evaluation of v, the organisation providing grants for youth volunteering opportunities.
Steve is also Director of the Doctoral Training Centre at the University of Birmingham. He has a wide range of research interests covering inequality, employment, social security, wealth and the balance between state, family and self-provision (such as in pensions and child support).
Experience
Steve has been active in social research for over twenty years. He moved to Birmingham in January 2007, and has previously worked for IFS, PSI and at the Universities of Bath, Bristol and Loughborough. He has particular expertise in the secondary analysis of complex datasets, though his work has included qualitative and mixed-method designs. Steve teaches the final year course ‘Poverty and Social Security’, and contributes to teaching on MA research methods and undergraduate courses.
